Right, right on!

Today is my grandmother's birthday. She would have been 83 years old. Memo died just a little over a year ago and I have thought of her often lately...smoking her kools, drinking Shultz, dancing, making plum preserves, growing collard greens, shopping (she was well known at many stores) loving her musty (that's what she called me and no I don't stink, lol) and just protecting her family.

My grandmother was a fireball!! She swore like a sailor. Son o'bitch and bastard were two of her favorite expletives. When she swore she would quickly follow it with "now don't say what Memo says." She even reminded me of that in my adulthood, lol. Memo gave her family so many pearls of wisdom and was always a straight shooter. You didn't have to guess what she was thinking because she would tell you even if you didn't care to hear it. She would usually end those hard statements with "right, right on!" She loved us deeply and we knew it because she ALWAYS told us.

Some of her pearls...
1) Never put your drink down because someone may put something in it. (She told me this years before I even knew what slipping someone a mickey was, lol).
2) Just because folks claim they are Christians doesn't mean they don't act like devils.
3) Always blanch your peas before you put them up for the winter (picking and shelling peas is one of my favorite memories with her).
4) The Junkyard Dog can whoop any man! (My grandmother loved wrestling).
5) Read the paper everyday.

I am so fortunate to have lived 37 years with this one-of-a-kind woman in my life. She and my grandfather would have been married 65 years in December.
